September 6, 2011, San Diego, CA – Insurance brokerage Barney & Barney LLC, which boasts one of the largest employee benefits divisions in California, welcomes Dr. Daniel Friedland to serve as Medical Director for the company’s renowned health and productivity team.

Dr. Friedland will help to expand Barney & Barney’s existing wellness offerings by providing education and tools that enable clients to make effective healthcare decisions, navigate the healthcare system and manage stress to take greater control of their health, productivity and healthcare expenses.

"We believe employers can have a profound impact on the health of their employees and in turn improve their own bottom line," commented Shawn Pynes, Principal and Division head of Barney & Barney’s Employee Benefits Department. "By adopting programs that can lead to maximum health, employers not only foster good will with their employees, they see a direct positive impact on their own business."

"Part of Dr. Friedland’s focus will be on how to help employers develop wellness programs to optimize health and productivity and minimize stress, turnover and absenteeism," Pynes continued.

Board certified in Internal Medicine and a member of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, Dr. Friedland is uniquely qualified to serve as an expert for the firm’s growing health and wellness programs. He is the author of Evidence-Based Medicine: A Framework for Clinical Practice, one of the first textbooks to guide physicians on this well established approach to making effective medical decisions. Now every doctor in the United States is trained this way.

During his medical training at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, Dr. Friedland founded the UCSF Medical Student Network to facilitate physician well-being and the compassionate delivery of care. Inspired by this experience, he has immersed himself in the fields of neuroscience and mindfulness and discovered that the framework of evidence-based medicine not only promotes scientific intelligence, but also cultivates emotional intelligence to achieve a more holistic approach to health and well-being.

Dr. Friedland has harnessed the framework of evidence-based medicine to offer groundbreaking programs though his SuperSmartHealth initiative that empower individuals to more fully engage in their health, navigate stress and optimize their vitality, creativity and productivity.

"Barney & Barney takes pride in customizing wellness programs for clients, and we’ve seen great success with this – from double the average engagement rates to state recognition for work wellness programs. The addition of Dr. Friedland will allow us to enhance our already successful wellness programs and deliver even greater value to our existing and expanding client base," Pynes concluded.
